How I take my OOTD photos for Instagram

Hello darling! I hope you’re feeling swell today.

A question I’m asked frequently is “who takes your outfit photos?” or some variation thereof. People often assume I rope in Mr Greatnews, which is completely untrue. I am a (mostly) independent woman when it comes to my outfit of the day photos.

(Besides, Mr Greatnews has his own getting ready in the morning to do without me dragging him into taking my outfit photos!)

So I’ll pull back the curtain and reveal the wizard – this is how I take my outfit of the day (OOTD) photos for Instagram.

Excuse potato quality photos, these were taken on my phone

Equipment I use

  • Canon 600D
  • Tripod

And my secret weapon…

Ta da!

A remote control! It’s an infrared remote Mr Greatnews bought from AliExpress.

So each morning after I finish my hair and makeup and putting my outfit together, I’ll head out to our balcony (or to our hallway if the weather’s bad) and get set up. I try to aim the tripod to be about chest height, otherwise my photos make me look very short (which I am, but I don’t need help looking short!).

I set the camera to auto-focus and on creative auto mode, so when I hit the button on the remote I have a second for the camera to focus before I pose. This works better for me than a self-timer mode because that way it (almost) always focuses on me, whereas the self-timer mode will only focus on what’s right in front of it when you hit the button.

I’ll take a few photos in different poses from a distance, then we move to the close up for focusing on makeup, hair and/or accessories.

I raise the height of the tripod and angle the camera so it’s looking a little down on me as I feel that’s a more flattering angle for the look I’m going for.

I then take the SD card, chuck it into my computer, make a couple of tweaks in Photoshop (usually just cropping and lighting) and then email the photos to myself from my laptop to my phone to post on Instagram.

The finished product and what will be going on my Instagram feed tomorrow!

Due to a day of illness, I’m actually a day ahead on my OOTD posts nowadays. So they’re outfits I still wore, you’re just seeing what I wore the day before. This has been super convenient for weekends when my posting schedule is a little more all over the place because I’m lazy and love a good weekend sleep in.

And that’s my system for posting outfits to Instagram! I know it might seem like a lot of work, but the whole process takes about 10 minutes nowadays and it slots in nicely before work.

So what do you think? If you’re an avid Instagrammer, what’s your system or process for posting? Let me know in the comments!

Lots of love,
Mrs Greatnews xx

My process is fairly similar, but I use a Samsung galaxy s9, thus cutting out the laptop middleman. I use an app that lets me take infinite timed photos until I manually stop it, and a few sets of industrial lights from a hardware store, so I can take indoor shots.

I have a tripod for my phone – samsung s9 has a decent camera! I’d like to buy a proper camera in the future anyway. My issue is the only place to take a photo is my garden, which can be wild on the one hand, and boring on the other! I make do 😂
I make use of the various effects on Instagram these days- not the preset filters. I think Photoshop would be better for lighting though. Great post!
